Debt settlement is a process in which, the debtor and creditor decide on a reduced balance. The payment of this amount will be considered as the payment in full. The amount settled with the creditor has to be paid all at once.

The first and the most important step towards debt settlement is to choose a good debt settlement company.

Steps to follow while choosing a debt settlement company

1.Look at the company profile : The company must be registered with BBB (Better Business Bureau). The company must not have too many complaints with the BBB.Also check if they are members of the Trade Association of Settlement Company (TASC) .If a company is a member of both organizations, then you can be rest assured that the company follows the industry standards successfully.

2.Investigate the cost of the program : Try to find out in advance if you will be able to afford the program. If you have the slightest doubts that you cant, then do not enroll. This is because, if you cannot afford it and sign up for it, then you are only increasing your debt problems.

3.Consider the fee structure : Most companies will charge their fees upfront even before the first settlement is made. Although it is acceptable that some amount of money has to be collected by the company in order to function but the entire amount should not be charged upfront. A company, which is client friendly will charge a small sum in the beginning and take the rest after settlement.

4.Whether or not it offers any guarantee : Check to see if the services of the company are guaranteed. Incase they cannot settle your debts you should not need to pay a fee. The fee that you have already paid should be refunded.

5.Check the client services : The company you choose should not be one with poor client services. This information can be assessed by going through client testimonials.

Considering the above mentioned steps, you must enroll in a debt settlement program that lasts not more than 3 years.
